I’ve moved to Hong Kong for 2 years in 2 weeks. There are reasons why I love this place so much. They are very genuine and funny. They sound insulting, they curse all the time, but it’s just an expression of themselves. I love Cantonese. I love the language. I love how people like to exercise, and I love how the kids hang out and hike together. I love how they joke about crazy things. I love how much they like Japanese pop culture. I love how they interact with each other. I love how they don’t judge people for expressing themselves. I love how the elders are very caring. I love how they have a free soul. I love how they consider humans as humans.

I just realized that the word cucumber has so many different names:

  • 黄瓜
  • 青瓜
  • 吊瓜

Anyway, there are weird adverbs in Cantonese that I’m still struggling to use.

埋 (maai4) in Cantonese

According to that definition:

= adverb meaning “close to, together with, include” = similar to Mandarin 攏 or 一起

Key meanings:

  1. Including / together with / also
  2. Completion / finishing something

Examples from your source:

  • 等埋我啊! = Wait for me (too)! / Include me!
  • 同埋 = together with / and also
  • 做埋啲嘢先 = Finish doing these things first

今日再攞埋日清麻油

攞埋 = take/get (including/also/together)

It means: “Today I’ll also get the Nissin sesame oil” or “Today I’ll get the Nissin sesame oil as well.”

最終 (zeoi3 zung1) = at the end / finally / ultimately

Explanation: Refers to the final result or conclusion after everything. Example: 最終佢成功咗。(In the end, he succeeded.)

訪問 (fong2 man6) = interview / to visit

Explanation: To formally visit someone or conduct an interview for information. Example: 記者訪問咗總統。(The journalist interviewed the president.)

日清 (yat6 cing1) = Nissin (brand name)

Explanation: Japanese brand (日本 + 清), famous for instant noodles and sesame oil. Example: 我買咗日清嘅公仔麵。(I bought Nissin instant noodles.)

互相 (wu6 soeng1) = mutually / each other / saling

Explanation: Reciprocal action between two or more parties. Example: 我哋要互相幫助。(We should help each other.)

救贖 (gau3 suk6) = redemption / salvation

Explanation: To save or redeem someone from sin, guilt, or suffering. Example: 佢喺度搵緊心靈嘅救贖。(He’s seeking redemption for his soul.)

自尋短見 = bundir?

煲水 = ngerebus air, but has double meaning as berita buzzer woakokwaokwa

餸 = lauk
